U.S. Representative Jim McGovern, Chair of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China and one of the longest-serving supporters of the Tibetan cause in the U.S. Congress, joined members of the Tibetan community at the United Nations headquarters in New York to honour the memory of Loga Sangpo following his self-immolation on July 26.
Accompanied by members of his family, McGovern participated in a solemn vigil commemorating Loga Sangpo, whose act of self-immolation has become a powerful symbol of Tibetan resistance and a renewed call for international attention to the human rights situation in Tibet.
During the gathering, McGovern reaffirmed his longstanding commitment to the Tibetan people and their struggle to preserve their identity, religion, language, and fundamental freedoms. His presence at the vigil was widely welcomed by Tibetans, who viewed it as a meaningful expression of solidarity during a period of growing concern over China’s policies in Tibet.
The vigil served both as a tribute to Loga Sangpo’s sacrifice and as a reminder that many Tibetans continue to call for greater international engagement on the issue of Tibet and the protection of the Tibetan people’s rights.
