In the realm of geopolitics and international relations, the Tibet-China dispute remains a focal point, particularly regarding the Dalai Lama’s role and influence. Puran Chettri’s article titled “The Dalai Lama’s Trip to the US is to Prepare for the Transfer of Assets and the Recognition of the 15th Dalai Lama” which was published on Storify (website) is a deeply misleading piece, laced with speculative claims, and unsubstantiated narratives. This article aims to reveal Mr. Chettri’s misleading assertions, expose the underlying propaganda, and highlight how such writings serve to undermine Tibetan-Indian relations while aligning suspiciously with Chinese Communist Party (CCP) propaganda.

Chettri’s article speculates that the Dalai Lama’s stopover in Switzerland was intended to transfer assets and prepare for the recognition of the 15th Dalai Lama. He cites unverified sources and previously discredited reports to paint a picture of the Dalai Lama as a wealthy man, primarily concerned with his financial legacy.

However, this portrayal is grossly inaccurate. The Dalai Lama has lived a life dedicated to spiritual leadership and the welfare of the Tibetan people. The Gaden Phodrang Foundation, based in Switzerland, manages funds for charitable purposes, including the promotion of Tibetan culture, education, and religion. These funds are not personal assets for the Dalai Lama’s family but are instead directed towards the betterment of the Tibetan community. The article’s focus on a supposed $150 million wealth figure, without credible evidence, is a clear attempt to distort the Dalai Lama’s true intentions and character.

Chettri’s article delves into the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, suggesting that the current Dalai Lama is manoeuvring to ensure his reincarnation within a specific geopolitical context. This narrative is baseless and ignores the clear guidelines set by the Dalai Lama himself regarding the recognition of his reincarnation.

In a statement from September 24, 2011, the Dalai Lama outlined the process for recognizing his reincarnation, emphasizing that it should be conducted according to traditional Tibetan Buddhist methods, free from any political interference. He stated, “The person who reincarnates has sole legitimate authority over where and how he or she takes rebirth and how that reincarnation is to be recognized. It is a reality that no one else can force the person concerned, or manipulate him or her.” This statement directly contradicts Chettri’s insinuations, revealing them as a clear attempt to mislead and create confusion.

Moreover, the Dalai Lama has expressed that the recognition of his reincarnation will be a transparent process involving the Tibetan people, the heads of Tibetan Buddhist traditions, and other concerned parties. The notion that the Dalai Lama is secretly plotting to place his reincarnation in a position of power is not only unfounded but also offensive to the principles of Tibetan Buddhism.

Chettri’s article further implies that India is gradually abandoning its support for the Tibetan people, citing reductions in budget allocations for Tibetan institutions. While it is true that there have been adjustments in funding, the article fails to acknowledge the longstanding and deep-rooted support that India has provided to the Tibetan community.

India has been a steadfast ally of Tibet since the Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959. The Indian government has hosted the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamshala and has supported Tibetan refugees, offering them education, healthcare, and livelihoods. The claim that India is reducing its support for Tibetans based on budgetary changes is a gross oversimplification. Budget allocations can fluctuate due to a variety of economic factors, and these changes do not necessarily reflect a shift in India’s commitment to the Tibetan cause.

Furthermore, recent geopolitical developments, such as the passage of the Resolve Tibet Act by the US Congress and India’s continued hosting of the Tibetan government-in-exile, underscore the strategic importance both nations place on supporting the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people. This support directly counters the Communist Party’s narrative and reinforces the principles of democracy and human rights in the region.

It should be noted that Mr. Puran Chettri’s article bears striking similarities to the narratives often propagated by the Chinese Communist Party-controlled media. Which acts by casting doubt on the Dalai Lama’s intentions and painting him as a figure primarily concerned with wealth and power, the article aligns with their longstanding efforts to delegitimize the Tibetan spiritual leader and weaken the Tibetan movement.

The Chinese government to nobody’s surprise has consistently sought to control the narrative around the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation, going so far as to issue Order No. 5, which asserts the Chinese government’s authority over the recognition of reincarnations in Tibetan Buddhism. This move has been widely condemned by the international community as a blatant interference in religious affairs. Chettri’s article, whether intentionally or not, plays into the hands of the CCP by echoing its unoriginal talking points and spreading misinformation designed to create division and spread false speculative narratives.

Puran Chettri’s article should be viewed with scepticism and caution. Its speculative claims, lack of credible evidence, and alignment with CCP propaganda make it a dangerous piece of misinformation. The Tibetan cause is one of justice, human rights, and the preservation of a unique cultural and religious heritage. As such, it is essential to counter-narratives like this with the truth.

The Tibetan people, along with their supporters in India and around the world, must remain vigilant against attempts to sow discord and weaken their resolve. The Dalai Lama’s legacy is one of peace, compassion, and resilience—a legacy that must be protected against the forces of propaganda and deceit.
