NEW YORK, August 27, 2026: Tibetan Youth Congress President Tsering Chomphel, accompanied by members of the family of Pawo Lobga Rangzen, former TYC President and Member of Parliament Tenzing Jigme, and Regional Tibetan Youth Congress New York and New Jersey President Jamphel Choesang, met with representatives of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York to discuss the deteriorating human rights situation in Tibet and the circumstances surrounding Lobga Rangzen’s self immolation outside the United Nations.
The delegation met with Yaryna Ferencevych, Deputy Representative of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, and Maria Macarena Apud, Adviser at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations Human Rights Desk. During the meeting, the delegation briefed the U.S. officials on Pawo Lobga Rangzen’s self immolation outside the United Nations on July 2, 2026, as well as his final message highlighting the Tibetan freedom struggle and calling for urgent international action. According to the delegation, Rangzen’s sacrifice reflected the deep frustration and desperation resulting from what it described as the continued denial of fundamental rights to Tibetans.
The representatives of the Tibetan Youth Congress and Rangzen’s family also raised concerns over China’s recently enacted Ethnic Unity Law, arguing that the legislation could further institutionalize policies affecting Tibet’s distinct national, cultural, linguistic and religious identity. The delegation stressed that developments inside Tibet require sustained international scrutiny, particularly as policies affecting Tibetan identity and cultural expression continue to draw concern from Tibetan representatives and rights advocates.
The meeting also focused on the role of the United States and the broader international community in bringing the situation in Tibet before the United Nations. The delegation urged the U.S. Mission to maintain attention on Tibet through the UN General Assembly and its human rights mechanisms, emphasizing the need for continued discussion of the human rights situation and accountability for policies affecting Tibetans.
The delegation further called on the United States to ensure that Tibet’s human rights situation is raised directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his upcoming meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. The delegation said sustained engagement at the highest diplomatic levels is necessary to ensure that concerns over Tibet remain part of the international human rights and diplomatic agenda.
The meeting comes amid renewed efforts by Tibetan organizations and representatives to draw international attention to developments in Tibet and to seek greater diplomatic engagement on the Tibetan issue. The delegation said the discussions with the U.S. Mission to the United Nations were intended to reinforce the need for sustained international attention and action on Tibet at a time when it considers the situation to be increasingly urgent.
